This is the end... for now.
Dissidents were an indispensable part of the path to freedom. They constantly worked on gaining attention of the West, which added lots of pressure on the USSR. They produced and disseminated underground press so the society would be aware of the realities of their lives under a repressive government. They united the struggling and deprived nation to come together and take their country back – peacefully, truthfully and with dignity. Political movements towards independence gained momentum and the foundations built by the resilience of dissidents paved the way for strong-willed Lithuanians to be the first ones to declare independence from the Soviet Union. The constant struggle during the years of the occupation became a defining characteristic of the Lithuanian nation which persists to this day and continues to encourage us to never take our freedoms and rights for granted. That’s how I know that Lithuania functions on the gears of this resilience and will never allow an oppressive government to devoid them of their rights again.
