This is the end... for now.
Dissidents were an indispensable part of the path to freedom. They constantly worked on gaining the attention of the West, which put an immense amount of pressure on the USSR. They produced and disseminated the underground press so the outside world would be aware of the realities of their lives under a repressive government. They united our struggling and deprived nation, bringing us together to take our country back – peacefully, truthfully, and with dignity. Political movements towards independence gained momentum from the foundations built by the resilience of dissidents and paved the way for strong-willed Lithuanians to be the first to declare independence from the Soviet Union. The constant struggle during the years of the occupation became a defining characteristic of the Lithuanian nation, which persists to this day and continues to encourage us to never take our freedoms and rights for granted. That’s how I know that Lithuania operates on the gears of this resilience and will never allow an oppressive government to strip them of their rights again.
